What is a Salt Spray Chamber?

A salt spray test chamber is an enclosed cabinet that is used in manufacturing environments for testing the corrosion resistance of products and samples. As a result of a high-pressure nozzle spraying a salt solution into the chamber, a highly corrosive environment is created in which an item is placed for a period of time. The process of salt spray testing is also known as salt fog testing.

Yatherm Scientific Salt Spray Chamber is one of the most realistic and reliable corrosion test chambers available, commonly used for corrosion resistance testing in automotive, paint, surface coatings, chemicals, aerospace, electronics, the automotive industry, offshore and defense.

How does a salt spray chamber work?

A salt spray chamber creates a highly corrosive environment that accelerates the corrosion of test specimens. This chamber uses a salt solution containing 5% sodium chloride (NaCl) in water, which is similar to seawater's salt content. The chamber maintains a controlled temperature, humidity, and pH level to ensure consistent testing conditions.

A salt spray test is conducted by placing samples in a chamber and directing the spray onto them for a specified period of time. Depending on the application and the material being tested, test durations can range from a few hours to several hundred hours.

It is imperative to inspect the samples after the test is complete for signs of corrosion, such as rust, pitting, or discolouration. Corrosion is measured using a variety of methods, including visual inspection, weight loss analysis, and electrochemical testing.

Salt Spray Chamber: Benefits

It is the most reliable instrument for assessing the corrosion resistance of surface coatings in salt-laden environments in which Yatherm salt spray chambers are used. It has been specifically designed to test the ability of components to resist corrosion due to atmospheric conditions using this time-tested product. It provides complete flexibility when simulating real-life weathering conditions.

Yatherm Salt Spray Test Chamber is manufactured in SS304 in accordance with EN ISO 9227 standard. There are three types of programmed environments available for salt sprays that require air drying and high humidity at low temperatures under 50 degrees Celsius.
